Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging – What you need to know
Why EV Charging Is Different
Unlike a clothes dryer that runs for an hour and cools down, an EV charger runs continuously for 8–12 hours. Because of this, all wiring, breakers, and devices must be rated at 125% of the load to handle the sustained demand safely.
Hardwired vs. Outlet Charging
We recommend a hardwired EV charger, here is why:
Repeatedly plugging and unplugging from an outlet loosens the terminals over time, creating a poor connection and poor connections generate heat and fire risk. If you choose to use an outlet, it must be rated specifically for EV charging.

EV INSTALLATION PROCESS
INSTALLATION BEST PRACTICES
- All connections should be torque tightened to the manufacturer’s specifications using a torque screwdriver or wrench, this is a step that is frequently skipped.
- AFCI breaker required if using an outlet indoors.
- AFCI/GFCI combo breaker required if the outlet is outdoors or in a garage.
- If using an outlet, plan for a safety inspection every 1 to 1.5 years.
Hire a licensed electrician…having an open slot in your electrical panel does not mean it’s safe to add a circuit. A qualified electrician should perform a load calculation to confirm your panel can handle the added demand, otherwise a panel upgrade may be required. Bottom line: EV charging done right is safe and reliable. Cut corners and you risk overheating, electrical damage, or fire. Always work with a professional.
